Steven Gerrard: How Paul Pogba improves Man United

Steven Gerrard believes Paul Pogba improves Manchester United’s creativity in the final third.

The France international made a bright start to the 2017-18 season with two goals and two assists in his opening four Premier League games.

However, the Red Devils midfielder suffered a hamstring problem in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Basel in the Champions League back in September.

Pogba returned to Jose Mourinho’s side for their 4-1 win over Newcastle United as the versatile midfielder scored one goal and made one assist to hit the ground running.

The 25-year-old midfielder produced a dominant performance in Manchester United’s 3-1 victory over title rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.

Pogba received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin in the 74th minute to rule the club record signing out of the Manchester derby.

Former Liverpool captain Gerrard believes Pogba will be a miss to Manchester United given the attributes that the French star brings to Mourinho’s team.

“He came in with a huge price-tag and that comes with great pressure, especially at a club like Manchester United,” Gerrard told BT Sport. “He’s growing all the time.

“He certainly makes Manchester United a lot stronger and more of a threat in the final third. He’s a quality passer but his biggest strength is his athleticism and his legs.

“He can join the defensive side but also help the forward players because of his legs and his passing ability. He’s also a threat in the box off set-pieces.”

Pogba scored five goals and made four assists in the Premier League in his first season back at Manchester United.

The Red Devils are looking to win the Premier League for the first time since 2013.
