Paul Scholes has suggested that he would love to see Manchester United sign a new number 10 to help bring out the best of Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgian striker has been struggling to find the net in recent weeks after having made a strong start to life at Manchester United following his transfer from Everton back in July.
Lukaku has scored seven goals in his first 10 Premier League games for Manchester United but has failed to net in his last six games in all competitions.
And former Manchester United midfielder Scholes believes that’s down to Lukaku not having enough service behind him for the Red Devils.
Speaking to BT Sport, Scholes replied when asked what he feels the Red Devils are missing: “I always think that a so-called number 10 is the man who links it all together.
“A number 10 links the midfield to the forwards. I don’t think they’ve got a good enough number 10 at the moment. They’re always facing with their back to goal. They’re always on the half-turn.
“It doesn’t help Lukaku, either. If there is a number 10 playing the ball into Lukaku, it opens it up for Lukaku’s movement.
“We’re not seeing a lot of that. The number 10 is always going back to midfield.”
It remains to be seen whether Manchester United will make any signings in the forthcoming January transfer window.
Manchester United are currently preparing for their crunch Premier League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
Jose Mourinho’s men have been in good form in recent weeks, with the Red Devils having beaten Tottenham 1-0 at Old Trafford last weekend and then taking a step closer towards Champions League last 16 qualification with victory over Benfica on Tuesday.
Manchester United are aiming to win the Premier League for the first time since 2013 this season.
