Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho makes Valencia’s Carlos Soler his No.1 target in January

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has drawn up his list of potential targets for the January transfer window and wants to sign Valencia’s Carlos Soler, according to reports. Mourinho made no secret of his desire to sign four players over the summer, though only managed to bring in three – notably missing out on Inter Milan star Ivan Perisic. United are still lacking a little bit of firepower as a result, especially in the absence of Paul Pogba, and now The Independent claim Mourinho will push for Soler to solve the problem.

The 20-year-old has been a revelation since establishing himself in the first team at Valencia, though is much more of a playmaker than out-and-out winger Perisic. He has registered four assists and netted once in his 11 La Liga appearances this season, starting every match as Valencia have climbed to second in the table, and can provide a much-needed creative spark.

According to the report, Soler would command a fee of around £40 million – a steep asking price for a player who only made his first-team debut 11 months ago. However, the transfer fee could be offset by including midfielder Andreas Pereira in the deal, with the Brazilian currently on loan at the Mestalla and keen to stay there.

United’s hopes of landing Soler will be boosted by the fact that Valencia are struggling financially, and an offer around the £40m mark would be very hard for them to reject. Mourinho, though, may not be able to make such a large bid, with the club hierarchy making it known to their manager that the massive funds that have been made available in the last two windows are not sustainable.
