United are on the verge of securing their place knockout stages of the Champions League after picking up three points against Benfica this evening.
Benfica’s goalkeeper Mile Svilar had a mixed night after saving Anthony Martial’s spot kick after 15 minutes.
But he could do nothing to prevent Nemanja Matic’s powerful shot striking the foot of the post and ricocheted off his back into the net to open the scoring.
United were rewarded another penalty in the second half and with Martial off the pitch at the time there was some confusion as to who would take it.
Romelu Lukaku looked as though he would be the man to step up for the spot-kick but Mourinho interjected from the touchline leading to Blind taking the penalty.
And the United boss has explained why he chose the Dutch defender to take the penalty.
“The reason is, Martial was the player to take, he took, he missed and he was not even on the pitch,” Mourinho said.
“The players were happy to take the responsibility, Romelu was happy to do it, Herrera the same.
“We train, I analyse and I try to make the right decisions.
“In the last few days Martial didn’t miss one and he was taking so many against three good goalkeepers and he missed to sometimes the choice is the wrong one.
“But Daley was my decision in the moment.”
